WTO Doctoral Studies Support Program 

Currently, as part of the WTO Doctoral Studies Support Program, the WTO Secretariat welcomes PhD students from developing nations to conduct research at the WTO and works closely with their academic supervisors to provide them with guidance and mentoring. The goal of the PhD Internship Program, also known as the WTO Support Programme for Doctoral Studies, is to assist developing nations in building their academic capacity to address WTO-related issues.

WTO Support Program Eligibility Requirements

  • Nationals of a country, customs territory, or WTO member state who are negotiating membership..
  • Citizens of a developing or least-developed country (LDC).
  • Possess a PhD or equivalent in international relations, law, economics, or a related WTO field.
  • They are nearing the end of their PhD program with at least 75% thesis writing completion.
  • Work in English, French, or Spanish, the World Trade Organization’s official languages.

Ph.D. Internship Program Advantages

  • Daily stipend of CHF 60 (inclusive of holidays and weekends).
  • The WTO covers travel costs to and from Geneva.
  • Interns must arrange their health insurance.

WTO Support Programme for Doctoral Studies Application Process

  • Candidates must complete an application and submit the necessary paperwork.
  • An internship doesn’t grant the right to apply for secretariat positions elsewhere.
  • Interns can apply for external positions.
