A Brief History of Herbsaint Liqueur
Herbsaint was created more than a century ago by the New Orleans-based pharmaceutical company W.A. Luce and Company. The distillery used herbs and spices to create medicines before turning its attention to Herbsaint liqueur, which is one of many brands in the company’s portfolio today. Invented in 1910, Herbsaint was initially promoted as a “tonic” that could be consumed neat or on the rocks as an alternative to regular whiskey or brandy.
The Herbsaint Story:
The Herbsaint story begins in New Orleans, with a man and his dream. In 1934, J. Marion Legendre created the first bottle of Herbsaint Original Formula Liqueur after he had perfected his family recipe for the world’s finest herbal liqueur. To this day, herb saint is still made by hand in small batches using the same secret recipes that have been passed down through generations.
There are two kinds of people in this world: those who like absinthe and those who have never tried it. There is no middle ground. Absinthe is a distilled spirit made from herbs, including wormwood (the plant that gives the drink its namesake), aniseed, and fennel. It has a very high alcohol content — between 55% and 75%, which accounts for its intense flavor.

The Birth of the New Orleans Cocktail
In the early 1800s, the port city of New Orleans was a bustling hub of industry and culture. The Mississippi River afforded easy access to goods from America’s heartland as well as valuable exports like sugar cane, tobacco, and cotton. The New Orleans cocktail is said to have been created at the behest of one such importer. In 1838 or 1839, Antoine Amedee Peychaud arrived in New Orleans with his family and an array of exotic ingredients from the
Other Applications for Herbsaint
Herbsaint was created in 1934 by New Orleans pharmacist and chemist J. Marion Legendre to replace Absinthe, which had been banned earlier that year. The ban of Absinthe was due to its high alcohol content and its alleged psychedelic effects when consumed. To avoid a similar fate, Legendre removed the wormwood from the recipe, added more anise and other herbs to increase the flavor, re-labeled it as Herbsaint, and sold it as an after-dinner digest. Herbsaint is an essential oil-based herbal extract. This product is made by steeping a number of different herbs and spices in ethanol, which gives them their bitter taste. While herb saint can be used as a substitute for absinthe or other strong alcoholic drinks, it has several uses outside of the realm of mixing into cocktails.
Touro Infirmary and the Herbsaint Elixir
Touro Infirmary was founded in 1834 when the state of Louisiana granted the City of New Orleans a charter to establish the first public hospital. It opened on December 28, 1834, as the “General Hospital,” and was located at what is now 1213 Perdido Street. In 1838, it received its first major endowment from Drs. Isaac H. Taylor and Samuel L. Freret, who had each made large contributions with the understanding that their names would be
The Prohibition Era and the Saints’ Return to New Orleans
It’s no secret that the 1920s were a time of excess, and nowhere is that more evident than in New Orleans. During this decade, alcohol flowed freely through the streets of New Orleans amidst a sea of jazz music and speakeasy-style establishments. It’s also widely known that the Saint has historically enjoyed spending his days toasting with friends at an array of local watering holes throughout New Orleans.
New Orleans, a city known for its party atmosphere and rich culture, has had a history filled with both sadness and joy. The prohibition era was one of the most difficult periods in American history, but it was also the time when The Saints were able to return home after a hiatus during WWI.
