Randall Cobb had no idea when his number would be called on Thursday night, but the Packers’ long-time receiver was sure to be ready. With Davante Adams, Allen Lazard, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling all out against an unbeaten Arizona Cardinals team, quarterback Aaron Rodgers turned to his trusted partner inside the red zone, and Cobb responded with a pair of second-half touchdowns that proved crucial in Green Straight’s 24-21 victory at State Homestead Arena in Glendale, Ariz.
The primary, which came on a quick out on first-and-goal from the Cardinals’ 2-yard line, gave the Packers their first lead of the game, a two-score advantage. Cobb got free in the end zone off an incline on third-and-5 from the Cardinals’ 6-yard line four seconds into the fourth quarter, restoring a two-score lead.
“I told myself coming into this game that I had no idea what it was going to be like, that I had no idea how many opportunities I was going to get, and that I had no reason,” said Cobb, who started the period. “Make a play whenever the opportunity presents itself, and figure out how to catch it. I only had the choice of making that play and putting us in position.”
Cobb was the most dynamic Green Narrows receiver with over 30 catches and 30 rounds of involvement added to his repertoire with Adams and Lazard both on the Coronavirus/save rundown and Valdes-Scantling still on hurt hold. Freshman third-round pick Amari Rodgers, Equanimeous St. Brown, practice-crew standout Juwann Winfree, and Malik Taylor, who was activated off of the Coronavirus/save list earlier in the day, made up the rest of the receiving corps.
Things didn’t get much easier for the Packers after starting tight end Robert Tonyan went down with a knee injury after catching a 33-yard pass on a deep crosser with 2 minutes, 41 seconds left in the second quarter. While AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones combined for 151 yards on the ground, the Packers had seven different players intercept Rodgers’ throws.
“When you have the best receiver in the league and the best quarterback in the league, you may sometimes get overpowered and not have as many opportunities,” Cobb said. “‘Make the mentors need to get you included at whatever moment they’re calling plays,’ I told the players the night before the game. I told them, “Make the mentors need to get you included at whatever point they’re calling plays.” Today, I believe a few people took a step forward and demonstrated what they can do when they make contact with the ball.”
Cobb is tied with Jones for the most touchdown receptions this season with four, thanks to his two against Arizona. Cobb was re-acquired right before the start of the instructional course in a trade with the Houston Texans, and he is grateful for his role in Green Inlet’s 7-1 start to the 2021 mission. “I was on the opposite side of the field when the Packers faced the Texans. Jones and Dillon, as they have all season, reacted to the situation, completing 188 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown on 38 attempts to lead Green Inlet’s offense.”
“I believe that was important for our plan,” Dillon said of the group’s success on the ground. “However, in that running back room, we were getting ready to be the flash if the offense required it, conversing with Mentor (Ben) Sirmans and everyone else in that room.” Having the option to get out there and start rolling the chains was a fantastic idea.
Dillon led the Packers in rushing yards with 78 on 16 carries, the majority of which came after contact. Jones, in the meantime, scored Green Narrows’ first touchdown in the first quarter and acted as the team’s primary receiver, hauling in seven passes for 51 yards. Cobb stated, “Their ranges of ability are so unusual, the two of them.” “AJ’s size and ability to grab the ball out of the backfield, as well as Aaron’s ability to setup at beneficiary.”
The two oversaw a defense that prevented multiple turnovers and limited the Cardinals to only 98 total yards in the first half, allowing the Packers to maintain an early lead. “Mentor Dim is a fantastic mentor,” Adrian Amos, a health and wellness expert, remarked. “Everyone had the utmost faith in him when it came to calling the plays. It wasn’t a recoil or anything close to that. That is a tremendous achievement for him.”
