On Monday, Google published a new doodle in honor of cell researcher Dr. Kamal Ranadive’s 104th birthday. Ibrahim Rayintakath, a guest artist from India, created the Google Doodle. In 1917, Kamal Samarath, better known as Kamal Ranadive, was born in Pune, India. Ranadive excelled academically as a result of her father’s push to seek a medical education, but she found her calling in biology instead.
While working as a researcher at the Indian Cancer Research Center in 1949, she earned a doctorate in cytology, the study of cells (ICRC). According to Google, she returned to Mumbai (then Bombay) and the ICRC after a fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where she founded the country’s first tissue culture laboratory.
Ranadive was one of the first researchers in India to propose a relationship between breast cancer and genetics and establish correlations between cancers and particular viruses, as the director of the ICRC and a pioneer in animal modeling of cancer development. The Indian Women Scientists’ Association (IWSA) was created in 1973 by Dr. Ranadive and 11 colleagues to support women in scientific professions, according to the report.
