African Studies Fellowship: The MARLÈNE AND PAOLO FRESCO Fellowship

Applications for the African Studies Fellowship: The MARLÈNE AND PAOLO FRESCO Fellowship encouraged eligible individuals to promote and fund more research on the cultural contacts that took place between the Mediterranean region and Africa between the years 1250 and 1750. Post-doctoral researchers working in disciplines such as art history, archeology, expressive cultural history, musicology, economic history, intellectual, political, and religious history, literature, and languages who are interested in studying African history are eligible for this grant.

The MARLÈNE AND PAOLO FRESCO Fellowship Qualifications

  • Candidates must have their PhDs and upload a certificate scan.
  • No second PhD project is allowed.
  • Must speak French, Italian, or English fluently.
  • Strong foundation in early modern African history and its global exchanges.
  • Six-month study at ITatti in Florence with access to local and regional resources.
  • Requires original research on the fellowship-granted subject.

The MARLÈNE AND PAOLO FRESCO Fellowship Application Process 

  • Electronic submission in English or Italian is required.
  • Scholars can apply for one fellowship at I Tatti per academic year.
  • Two academics with extensive knowledge of the applicant’s work must submit recommendations online.
  • Register referees in the reference tab for time to send recommendation letters.
  • Referees will be notified of the process for electronic submission.
  • Applicants must inform academics about the project’s nature and submission deadline.
