Murphy of Centerville wins Gold Glove in his third season.

On Sunday night, Sean Murphy, a Centerville High School alumni and former Wright State Raiders catcher, earned the American League Gold Glove Award. Murphy, who is 27 years old, is the first catcher in Oakland Athletics history to win a Gold Glove. He was third in the majors in defensive runs saved by a catcher (10) and fourth in the American League in ERA (3.99) and games started (104).

Former A’s pitcher Dallas Braden, now a broadcaster, reacted to Murphy’s victory on Twitter. Braden stated, “I couldn’t be more excited for the recognition of the hard work Sean Murphy has put in & continues to put in.” “As tough as they come, a man with a strategy, and it usually begins with putting each and every one of his pitchers, as well as the handling and care of his entire staff, well ahead of himself.”

Murphy batted.216 with 17 home runs and 59 RBIs, the seventh most by a catcher in A’s history. Murphy, a third-round choice in the 2016 draft, debuted in the major leagues in September of this year. He hit .245 in 20 games that season. In 39 games as a catcher in 2020, he hit.233 with seven home runs. He hit two home runs in the postseason in 2020.
