‘Nimblewill Nomad,’ 83, is oldest to hike Appalachian Trail

The oldest hiker to complete the Appalachian Trail is M.J. “Sunny” Eberhart. When he retired more than a quarter-century ago, the 83-year-old from Alabama began walking. From the Florida Keys to northern Quebec, he traveled 4,400 miles (7,080 kilometers). Dale “Greybeard” Sanders, a former world record holder, finished the hike in 2017 at the age of 82.

Because of his age, Eberhart is the polar opposite of two young hikers who finished the trek during the epidemic. Juniper Netteburg, 4, completed her missionary journey with her missionary parents last year. Eberhart will return to his house on Flagg Mountain, the Appalachian Mountains’ southernmost peak at 1,000 feet. He looks after a fire tower and cabins that the Civilian Conservation Corps erected.
