A flash flood watch has been issued for 17 counties in New Jersey as the country braces for a nor’easter typhoon with strong thunderstorms and strong winds that could dump up to four inches of rain between Monday night and Tuesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service has issued a nearly statewide flash flood watch (except for Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties) that will last from 8 p.m. Monday to 5 p.m. Tuesday. Despite this, rain is expected to fall inside the South Jersey counties that are no longer on the alert.
A total of 2.5 to 3.0 inches of rain is expected throughout a large swath of the country, perhaps causing flash floods in creeks, streams, urbanized areas, and areas with poor drainage.
Monday is expected to be particularly dry, with the majority of the rain falling from late Monday night until the middle of Tuesday, according to the weather service’s morning forecast discussion. However, some showers are expected to arrive later this afternoon.
Severe thunderstorms are possible Monday night, with negative winds capable of tearing down shrubs and power lines, resulting in disruptions. The strongest wind gusts, up to 45 mph, are expected Tuesday evening along the Jersey Shore.
Forecasters warn that even a minor alteration in the typhoon’s path could have a significant impact on rain totals. If the low moves are closer to the shore, more rain is likely, whereas if the device moves away from the coast, the effects are likely to be reduced.
From Tuesday morning until Thursday morning, minor coastal flooding is expected along the Jersey Shore and the Delaware Bay. From Trenton south, there is likely to be only sporadic minor flooding along the Delaware River.
Meanwhile, Monday’s maximum will likely be cloudy and mild, with highs in the low to mid-70s (10 to 15 degrees above normal for late October). Lows in the 50s are possible tonight, with highs in the low 60s expected Tuesday, when the majority of the rain occurs. We’ll dry out on Wednesday, even though it’ll most likely be gloomy. The sun is expected to return on Thursday, with highs in the low 60s.
