Sputnik Vaccine Rejected By South Africans Over HIV Fears.

The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority said on Monday that the Sputnik V Covid19 vaccine, developed by Russia, will not be approved due to concerns that it increases the risk of HIV infection in men. The decision was based on previous studies investigating the safety of Ad5, a modified form of adenovirus that causes respiratory diseases and is included in the Russian vaccine.

In a press release, the South African Product Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) advised that “use of the Sputnik V vaccine in South Africa, a setting with a high prevalence and incidence of HIV, may increase the risk of vaccinated men developing HIV.” He claimed that the business attempting to deploy Sputnik V in South Africa had no proof that the formulation was safe “in HIV-infected areas.” He noted that “the Sputnik V vaccination evaluation will remain open to the submission of sufficient safety data to substantiate demand.”

The Russian center Gamaleya, which developed Sputnik V, has indicated that it will provide evidence to demonstrate that SAHPRA’s claims are unfounded “”It’s completely false.” Over 7,000 people took part in clinical trials, which found that “There was no statistically significant increase in HIV1 infection in recipients of the adenoviral vector vaccine type 5 when all study participants and the period of follow-up were considered. South Africa has the greatest number of HIV-positive people in the world, as well as being the African country most affected by the pandemic. Vaccine aversion was a problem for him.

Approximately a fifth of the 40 million people planned to be vaccinated by early 2022 has been fully vaccinated to date. South Africa will begin immunizing children as young as 12 years old this week, and some immunocompromised residents may receive booster doses. The Johnson & Johnson Unidos, which contains a different form of adenovirus, as well as the Pfizer/BioNTech jab rRNA, are already available. A Chinese-made product, Sinovac, has also been approved. Despite the fact that it is available in at least 45 countries, the World Health Organization has not approved Sputnik V for emergency use.
